France’s Interior Minister Slams ‘Minority Trying to ‘Halalize Public Space’ After Barbie Screening Canceled – Le Figaro.
“We are in France, and in France there is no morality or virtue police,” said France’s Minister of the Interior, one week after the outdoor screening of the film Barbie was canceled under threat, reported Le Figaro.
A week after the outdoor screening of Barbie in Noisy-le-Sec (Seine-Saint-Denis) was canceled last Friday under threat, the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, on Thursday condemned the “unacceptable pressures” exerted on the town.
The planned open-air screening of Barbie in the Paris suburb of Noisy-le-Sec was cancelled at the last minute after local authorities received threats that the film promotes homosexuality and harms the integrity of women.
The town’s mayor Olivier Sarrabeyrouse (Communist Party) canceled it.
“While some accuse the film of ‘highlighting stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender characters,’ others condemn it as ‘neo-feminist propaganda,’” the mayor said in a statement, without identifying the ‘aggressive’ group who made the threat.
“A small group from the neighborhood” unhappy with the choice, accusing Gerwig’s work of harming the integrity of women and promoting homosexuality,” added Sarrabeyrouse.
“These pressures from a violent minority that wants to “halalize” public space are unacceptable, just as any retreat in the face of such communitarian demands is unacceptable,” Retailleau said on BFMTV.
